Safety Corner - November 2024
Safety Corner is a monthly column published in CarnivalWarehouse.com's Amusement Warehouse Magazine written by Worldwide Safety Group's president, Avery Wheelock. Please consider a subscription to Amusement Warehouse Magazine to read this and more about the Carnival, Fair, and Amusement Park Industry.
We have had another successful season in the great outdoor amusement industry here in North America. I want to say I hope that all our readers realize that they may have had a small part in keeping our industry safe by continuing to implement their safety policies and procedures that we talk about having every month in these articles.
Our associates of Worldwide Safety Group have traveled all over the country this year performing various types of inspections including insurance loss control surveys, corporate internal audits of facilities and parks, jurisdictional inspections in third party approved states and all kinds of safety related services. One common thing that we see is the need for education and continuing education of the people that we interact with while performing our duties. I know I need to continue to learn about our ever-changing industry and so do my associates that work with me.
With that thought in mind, I would like to once again get us all thinking about sending our leadership people to safety seminars and safety classes. I’m excited to be speaking at the World Waterpark Association Show this year, I will be talking about indoor waterpark inspections. We perform a lot of indoor and outdoor waterpark inspections and for anyone in that section of our industry that event is a must to attend. We can learn so much and speak with so many others in the waterpark field.
At IAAPA, there are days and days of classes and discussion groups about industry related topics. Some of you may already be attending or thinking about attending one of these classes or discussions. I encourage you to go and participate so you may learn something or be able to share something that will teach someone else something that you know. Safety Through Communication its not just a saying, its real and so important to our industry.
There are several safety seminars coming up including the AIMS safety seminar January 12-17th 2025. The NAARSO safety seminar is January 26-31st 2025 and the Northwestern Showmen’s Club safety seminar is February 17-21st 2025. The Northwestern seminar is one of my favorites because it is focused on the employees that are in the traveling outdoor amusement business and held every year at the Funtastic Shows Campus in Portland Oregon. Of course, the NAARSO seminar is also one I’m very much involved with, serving on the education and certification committees, but we can still have our favorites. Mrs. Burback always puts on a great event, and they feed you three meals a day if you attend.
There are several state supported safety seminars that also take place during the year, and I encourage everyone to investigate attending such an event in the near future. The people that operate in the northeast have the Pennsylvania safety seminars they can attend. The PACE seminar is sponsored by the PA State Showmen’s Association and the PA Amusement Parks Association and includes hands on training at Knoebel’s Amusement Resort. This is a great seminar to attend if you operate in that area. The State of Pennsylvania also holds two safety seminars in the fall and the spring that you can attend to maintain your PA inspectors license. Pennsylvania has great safety seminars to attend, and all are filled with various topics and instructors.
I hope that we have you all thinking about training in this industry, there are so many places to go get educated about your occupation in the industry. If you’re reading these articles, you are already committed to safety and hopefully are committed to doing your part to encourage others to keep our entertainment industry as safe as we can. Please let me know if you have any questions about what seminar would be a best fit for you or your company employees.
These are just a few things to get you thinking about continuing education. I hope that you gained one piece of information from this short article on safety and can help make our industry safer and better every day. I can be reached via email avery@worldwidesafetygroup.com or at 813-505-3938 for any questions or comments, please feel free to provide feedback to help me better communicate these safety related messages.
